March 30th, 2010 |
While many people are still talking about the negative state of the economy, the fact is there are jobs out there to be had. However, for each job available, there are hundreds of applicants who want to be chosen for the position. But don’t let that discourage you. Rather, let it motivate you to stand out from the rest of the pack. After all, once you land yourself that dream job, you’ll spend the rest of your career fighting to do just that. So take this as a training opportunity, and take as much as you can from it—you’ll be better for it in the end.
But what if you don’t feel your job experience allows you to stand out? Not to worry. Any job experience can be portrayed as relevant experience which will benefit your future employer, if you just take the time to word it properly. Take retail experience for example. There are an extremely large number of people who have worked in retail, but not so many who chose to stay in that industry. So does that mean that the experience was a waste? Absolutely not. For those in this position, you can easily highlight your experiences in a way which will translate to a competency to complete a number of future job tasks. You might chose to emphasize your people skills by using phrases such as “greeted customers and determined their needs,” and “recommended merchandise personalized to customers’ tastes.” You could also promote sales experience by using the descriptors “described a products features and key benefits,” or “demonstrated use of relevant products based on customer’s needs.” In addition, almost any job will require you to be organized, so it is always helpful to describe tasks which required this trait of you by describing tasks such as “tracked and maintained inventory weekly,” and “organized and processed merchandise exchanges.”
No matter how you decide to describe your past job experience, make sure the focus stays on highlighting the skills you will need in your desired job. If you stick to this formula, you can stand out against the many job applicants to land the job you’ve been looking for.
