Part Time Jobs For College Students

April 13th, 2010 |

More college students than ever are entering the workforce while still attending classes, albeit usually only for part time work. Often the reasons are purely economic: tuition rates are at historic highs, the cost of living in university towns can be on the expensive side, and frequently, work study part time positions are requirements in some students’ financial aid packages. Working part time has many benefits even for the college student who doesn’t need the extra cash; in an increasingly competitive job market, that extra experience can be a really important factor that can boost their chances of nabbing a highly sought after post grad position.

Part time work for college students does have some unique restrictions. When searching for a part time job, the college student should keep in mind several factors, including flexible scheduling, adequate pay, and proximity to campus. With these caveats in mind, the following list suggests some of the best part time jobs for college students.

On Campus Jobs

Working in the Computer Lab: On campus tech support jobs can be among the best to be had on campus. The pay rate tends to be relatively high and often the student can spend time studying on the clock if there are no tasks to complete. This is also a real resume booster for students who plan on IT careers.

Working at the Campus Gym: Some students tend to already be fitness focused gym rats. Why not get paid for all those hours you spend at the gym? University gyms usually have all sorts of positions open, from working the front desk to leading aerobics classes.

Working at the Library: This is the dream job for the student who is looking to get paid to study – the library is quiet and the pace of activity is slow. Many different opportunities are available at campus libraries aside from handling the books themselves including data entry and clerical work.

Working in the Dorms:

Sign up to become a resident advisor (RA) and you will not only be paid well but often your dorm rent is significantly reduced or altogether eliminated. This is the perfect job for dependable and responsible types who don’t mind mediating disputes and attending frequent meetings.

Off Campus Jobs

Domestic Work: This includes house sitting, pet sitting, house cleaning and babysitting – all classic college student jobs. Hours are flexible and generally the student can work as much or as little as they want. Find professors who need the assistance and the job does double duty; not only is the student getting paid but they are also creating a good relationship with what may become an impressive professional reference.

Working as an Assistant: This is a great career move for the motivated student. Almost any professional field has the need for assistant work, and this type of job is a great way to get a foot in the door with industry leaders. By working part time as a professional assistant, the student has a great opportunity to create many contacts and get direct industry experience.

The climate isn’t changing fast enough to worry about it. With seasonal changes being more than 100 degrees a 1 degree up swing or down swing in 100 years isn’t going to make any difference.
