Your Staff And You: The Basics Of Management

August 24th, 2010 |

Setting up a new company? Or currently managing one? Hours of brainstorming, preparation and a bit of psychology is needed as well as some expert advice are needed.

Finding the employees to be hired is one of the most challenging tasks. Recruitment is defined as the process of attracting, selecting, screening the people

The recruitment industry is based on the goal of providing a candidate to a client for a price. On one end of the spectrum there are agencies that are paid only if they deliver a candidate that successfully stays with the client beyond the agreed probationary period. On the other end of the spectrum there are agencies that are paid a retainer to focus on a client’s needs and achieve milestones in the search for the right candidate, and then again are paid a percentage of the candidate’s salary when a candidate is placed and stays with the organization beyond the probationary period. Today’s recruitment industry is fairly competitive, therefore agencies have sought out ways to differentiate themselves and add value by focusing on some area of the recruitment life cycle.

A lot of things may be considered when finding the right people for the company. From the qualifications of the applicants to their availability. This responsibility would now lie in the hands of the recruitment specialists. The recruitment industry has five main types of agencies: employment agencies, recruitment websites and job search engines, “headhunters” for executive and professional recruitment, niche agencies which specialize in a particular area of staffing and in-house recruitment. Screening and selecting of the candidates using tests and interviews comprise the recruitment process.

The act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives is the definition of management. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization  or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. Resourcing encompasses the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources, and natural resources.

In for-profit work, management has as its primary function the satisfaction of a range of stakeholders. This typically involves making a profit, creating valued products at a reasonable cost, and providing rewarding employment opportunities and likewise workplace health and safety.

In nonprofit management, add the importance of keeping the faith of donors. In most models of management/governance, shareholders vote for the board of directors, and the board then hires senior management. Some organizations have experimented with other methods  of selecting or reviewing managers; but this occurs only very rarely.

Staff management is the management of the subordinates in an organization. In large organizations, many of these functions are performed by a specialist department such as Personnel or Human Resources but all line managers are still required to supervise and administer the activities and well-being of the staff that report to them.
